Jakarta– The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has formed a special team (timsus) to investigate allegations of illegal levies (pungli) amounting to Rp4 billion in the KPK detention center. The timsus will be responsible for examining allegations of disciplinary violations by individuals within the KPK detention center.

“We are accompanied by the Secretary-General because the detention center falls under the General Bureau. The Secretary-General will form a special team to investigate the allegations of disciplinary violations,” said Deputy Chairman of the KPK, Nurul Ghufron, at the Red and White Building of the KPK in South Jakarta on Wednesday (21/6/2023).

Meanwhile, KPK Secretary-General Cahya H Harefa explained that the timsus has been formed to investigate the disciplinary violations committed by individuals within the KPK detention center. The team involves employees from various units.

“The aim is to ensure that no one is protected during the information search. This includes short-term handling of this incident and medium-term efforts to improve governance in the detention center,” said Cahya.

Previously, the Supervisory Council (Dewas) revealed findings of alleged illegal levies in the KPK detention center. It is suspected that certain individuals within the KPK detention center received illegal levies amounting to Rp4 billion between December 2021 and March 2022.

The individuals are believed to have received the illegal levies from KPK detainees or related parties. They collected the money by channeling it to a third-party account, and the funds were then received in cash by the individuals within the detention center. Dewas subsequently reported the alleged illegal levies by individuals within the detention center to the KPK leadership, urging them to take action.

According to Dewas, the illegal levies by individuals within the KPK detention center fall under criminal jurisdiction. The KPK has received reports regarding the discovery of these illegal levies, and they are currently being investigated. The KPK is investigating allegations of criminal corruption arising from the discovery of the illegal levies in the Red and White Building detention center.(dj)
